The World Engine is a furniture item that can be purchased from the Blacksmith. When placed, it allows players to change their world's difficulty to either Classic, Expert, or Master Mode. Changing difficulty modes costs 5 Fallen Stars, which will be taken from their inventory.

The World Engine cannot be used in Journey Mode; hovering over it with the cursor will state: "You cannot use this in Journey Mode, use its difficulty slider instead".
