The Spiky Ball Trap is a type of trap that can be found naturally in the Jungle Temple and, rarely, outside the Temple's door. When activated, it dispenses orange spiky balls that bounce several times. It has a cooldown of (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 5 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 4 seconds between activations. The spiky balls deal 80 / 160 / 240 damage to players (40 damage to NPCs, enemies, and critters).[1]

(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Spiky Ball Traps can be rotated 90° with a hammer. The total number of spiky balls spawned at once is limited. See below for details.

(Old-gen console and 3DS versions) Unlike Lihzahrd Bricks, breaking Spiky Ball Traps does not require the Picksaw.

Notes

  • The Spiky Ball Trap can shoot through a single block directly in front of it.
  • Spiky balls can only bounce off solid blocks, not platforms.

Desktop/Console/Mobile-Only Content: This section's information applies only to the Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions of Terraria.

Before the trap spawns a spiky ball, the game goes through every spiky ball in the world, and adds up their "effect" on the trap based on the pixel distance between the trap's center and the spiky ball's center (a tile is 16×16 pixels). A spiky ball's effect is:[2]

Effect Distance
in pixels
50 0–50
15 50–100
10 100–200
8 200–300
6 300–400
5 400–500
4 500–700
3 700–900
2 900–1200
1 >1200

If the sum of "effect" is less than 200, then a new spiky ball can be spawned.

Tips

  • Spiky Ball Traps are effective for home defense, especially while using enemy-triggered Pressure Plates.
  • While not as effective as Spear Traps, Spiky Ball Traps are still very effective for farming enemies.
