The Explosive Coating is a coating that, when consumed, provides the player the Explosive Thrown Weapon imbue, which causes throwing attacks to have a 33% chance to burst upon hitting an enemy, inflicting the Hellfire debuff to all nearby enemies for 2 seconds.
The buff lasts for ten minutes and, like all buffs, can be canceled at any time by right-clicking the icon.
